Extra managed launches are $49 per title, or you can download the files and publish them yourself.

It invents the characters, genre, age band, and life lesson, then writes and illustrates the book without requiring setup choices. Yes -- every paid book includes a narrated 5-page trailer with your choice of storyteller voice. Publisher and Studio include a full 20-page read-along; other paid books, including Author-plan and book-pack books, can unlock it for $19 per title. No. Full-book illustration runs in a background queue on our server, so you can close your browser or come back later and it keeps going. Studio books get top priority, followed by Publisher, then Author, then free previews. Check your book's Content tab any time to see progress and know when it's ready.

Paid books can be downloaded as a fixed-layout EPUB, a print-ready interior PDF (8.5x8.5 inches, 300 DPI), cover PDFs for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, a cover image, a metadata sheet, and an editable Word manuscript, or all of them together in one ZIP bundle. Free-preview exports are watermarked; upgrading or applying a book-pack credit unlocks clean files. The print specs are validated for KDP and IngramSpark so they upload cleanly.

There are three styles: Watercolor Storybook (soft, warm, traditional picture-book look), 3D Animated (rounded, cheerful, modern animated-movie style), and Flat Modern (bold, playful shapes with a contemporary edge). The style you choose applies consistently to every illustration — character portraits, page scenes, and the cover. The art style is set when you create a character and must match the book you put them in.

Yes. Approved characters stay in your Character Library and can be picked for future books, whether you use a subscription or one-time pack credits. The "New book in this series" button prefills the cast, art style, and series name, and gives the story writer context from the previous volume.

Yes, once the book is unlocked with a subscription or book-pack credit. You can redraw from scratch or request a specific change while keeping the relevant characters consistent. If you want the location to stay the same, say “keep the same background” or “match the previous setting” in your request; otherwise the requested change takes priority. Free-preview pages are illustrated once and cannot be redrawn until the book is unlocked.

Every BookBudKids book is 24 pages: 20 illustrated story pages plus a title page, copyright and AI-disclosure page, “The End” page, and a final page containing your author note when provided or left blank otherwise. The format is 8.5×8.5 inches square for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark.

Not automatically. Characters invented by Surprise Me are kept with that book but not added to your reusable library right away. Once the book is finished, you'll see an option to save any of them to your Character Library so you can pick them for future books. Characters you create yourself are always saved to the library as soon as they're approved.

Yes. Open the Book Content tab in your book and click any page to edit its text. Save your changes, then redraw the page — the new illustration will be built around your revised words. You can also save the text without redrawing if you are happy with the existing art.

Yes. Open the Overview tab of any book and use the Cast panel. You can add any approved character from your library — they must share the same art style as the book — or remove existing cast members. Adding or removing a character does not rewrite story text that is already written, but it affects every page you illustrate or redraw going forward.

Your account moves to the free tier at the end of your current billing period, with a 7-day grace window before that happens. Your books and files stay accessible for 30 days after the grace period ends — we recommend downloading anything you want to keep before that window closes. Books that are already finished are yours to keep; you just lose the ability to create new finished books without an active paid plan.

One-time book packs let you buy a set number of finished-book credits without a subscription: 1 book for $19, 5 for $49, or 10 for $89 -- credits never expire. Each book credit also includes 10 character portrait credits and full DIY export files. Managed SelfPublishing.pro distribution is not included with packs, but you can add a $49 per-title launch or publish the files yourself. If you already have a subscription, purchased credits are spent automatically after your monthly allowance runs out.

It unlocks automatically. The next time you open that book after subscribing or buying a book pack, we charge one book credit and clear the free-preview limits, so it behaves like any other paid book -- full illustration, redraws, and export. You do not need to start over.

Yes. When creating a character you can optionally attach a reference photo alongside or instead of a written description, and the AI will draw an original character based on it. Every upload is automatically screened, and you must confirm you own the photo or have the right to use it — recognizable copyrighted characters, brand logos, and photos of real people are not accepted. The photo is used only as an illustration reference and never appears in your finished book.

Every upload is screened before it is used. Photos showing a real person, a character that belongs to someone else, a brand logo, or unsuitable content are refused, and files must be under 10 MB and at least 200 pixels on each side. If the refusal mentions what our check noticed, such as a logo on a shirt or a mascot on a prop, remove or crop out that item and upload again. If you see "We could not check that photo just now," simply try again in a moment, or create the character from a written description instead.

Every book is written for one of three reader age bands: 0–3 (very short, repetitive text), 4–7 (classic picture book), or 8–10 (longer, richer passages). You can pick from more than 30 genres, such as bedtime, adventure, dinosaurs, space, or mindfulness, or describe your own idea. Each story also weaves in one of 23 life lessons, like kindness, courage, or managing feelings, shown through the story rather than preached.

Yes. You can register with your email address and a password, which you confirm through a verification email, or simply continue with Google on the sign-in page. If you forget your password, the reset link on the sign-in page emails you a new one. Your profile lets you update your name, email, picture, and password, and manage your plan.
